For when life hands you lemons … (and it will)

Have you ever been asked: “What do you do when life hands you lemons?”

And don’t you usually respond by saying smugly: “Why, make lemonade of course!”

Well sure you do, but even then we all know it’s a tongue-in-cheek response because before we can actually get to making the lemonade with the acid unwanted lemons that have unexpectedly dropped into our jug of life, we have to whine and complain and throw our hands up in the air in frustration.

And we do that because everyone knows that life can be pretty hard – and as a result we won’t have enough sugar or water to make the lemonade, we won’t know anyone who can give us a pretty jug to hold the lemonade, and most important of all, there isn’t anyone to physically get that spoon and stir our lemonade into reality. So what’s a guy or gal to do?  Sounds familiar?

Well guess what? Life happens. No, let me qualify: life happens especially when you don’t want it to. Those are the times you find out a loved one has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, your company is down-sizing and you are going to be laid off, your spouse doesn’t love you anymore and wants a divorce, your rebellious teenager is cutting classes and could be expelled from school … the list is never ending, because I haven’t even talked about trying to live on a budget or wondering when the miracle of one day seeing your salary outlast your expenses will be realised.

Unfortunately a bunch of lemons at some point in our lives is inevitable.  But I am suggesting that all we have to do is pause (and breathe deeply), take stock of our ‘lemon’ situation, and then prayerfully let God show you a viable way to make a super tasty, thirst-quenching flavored jug of lemonade which can be shared with anyone who happens to be thirsty just like us.

So let’s take a look at what a family did when they were served some seriously acid (and costly – financially and probably emotionally) lemons; and then use them as an excellent example when the time comes to make our own lemonade.

Verse for Reflection

“They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’  “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’  “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
