… and lead us not into temptation

As we move out into the Lenten ‘dessert’ it seems as though the more we pray and fast, the more life attacks us. That’s because the devil knows this is a time of heightened spiritual activity which brings us (hopefully) even closer to God, his biggest enemy.  We are only a few days in and he’s been really busy already!  Unexpected meetings are popping up or being cancelled, the car has a flat tyre and you are late for work (plus out of pocket), your cheque never made it to the telephone company and your phone’s not working, the children aren’t doing their homework, project deadlines are tighter than tight, and your spouse isn’t being ‘spousy’.  What’s a child of God to do in the middle of all this drama?

Be strong! Keep the faith and not give up! We have a long long way to go before Easter.  Let’s take hold of God’s word and hang in there.  We’ve got to see ourselves crossing the finish line and coming out on the other side not only rejoicing but celebrating, and telling the devil to: “get thee behind me Satan; God’s got me covered and there’s nothing you can do about it.”  Do I hear an amen?  Amen!

These 4 Things …

Our next steps?  Since Ash Wednesday there has been much conversation over who will give up what but I encourage you (if you haven’t done so already) to:

  1. Decide what will work best for YOU
  2. Approach someone who can sincerely support and encourage you
  3. Reach out to someone, who you can in turn support and encourage
  4. Write on a piece of paper your long term goal so that you can refer to it at Easter just to see how you’ve done.

After you’ve done the above it’s time to press in.  Immerse yourself in the word and spending quiet time with God.  Prepare yourself mentally and spiritually at the beginning of each day for any surprise attacks the devil may have in mind for you.  Before you go to bed thank God for helping you survive one more day and to give you the strength for tomorrow.  Make sure you ask Him to protect you from the devil who is out to lead us all into temptation so that we can not be delivered from evil.  Then, do it all over again.

For some additional reinforcement, we’re also going to focus on the verse below because temptation is going to be coming fast and furious:

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”  1 Corinthians 10:13

So are we ready for the journey?  Can you see us with our hands raised triumphantly at the end?  THE VICTORY IS OURS!
