It’s hard not to worry but these 5 tips will help

A place to sit

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

It’s hard not to worry when life is right up there in your face. As your situation worsens progressively you can even lose hope of it getting any better.

I worried about losing my job – and I lost it. I worried about losing my marriage – and I lost it. I worried about losing a loved one – and I lost them. Worrying (and I did a lot of it) didn’t help me to keep my job, my marriage or my mother. I worried so much it was like a hobby for me. I became a whining friend, a harried parent and a stressed out daughter; definitely not pleasant to be around.

The problem with worrying however is that it solves nothing and is usually a colossal waste of time.  I’ve gotten much better now, although some days I find myself slipping back under my worry blanket (that happens a lot because I’m a parent I suppose) and anxiously wondering what the future holds as I try to balance my home and career, spend quality time with family and stay on top of expenses.

Here are three tips to help you overcome worrying:

  1. Accept the things you cannot change … because they cannot be changed; understand this and life gets easier!
  2. Pray every day; let God carry your burdens … because that’s what He’s promised to do for us.
  3. Be grateful for your blessings … and yes, there are blessings to be found in our lives every single day.
  4. Know that God will strengthen you as you walk the hard paths and trust Him to help you to come out on the other side victorious.
  5. Enjoy the journey; you only travel this way once, so make time for recreational activities and spending special moments with loved ones.

I’ll say it again: it’s hard not to worry, especially when you are  the one struggling to keep your head above water.  But if we encourage each other to accept, pray, be grateful, know and enjoy life everything will fall into place – if not sooner, later for sure.

Let’s try it … together.
