From the time I could remember myself I have always loved visiting Farley Hill Great House, a sprawling mansion sitting in the middle of one of our well-known national parks in Barbados. Located in the parish of St. Peter, it’s rolling landscapes, overarching trees with massive trunks and roots, and natural beauty all draw visitors as well as locals to enjoy this amazing space.
Farley Hill has a rich and interesting history which starts from 1818 when the house was believed to have been built, extends into the 1870’s when it was visited by several English Princes/members of royalty, and was at a high in 1956 when it was partially restored for the filming of the movie Island in the Sun starring Harry Belafonte.
Although the mansion which once stood proudly (and within whose walls the echelons of England’s aristocracy were entertained) is sadly in ruins, I am secretly hoping that one day this once majestic building will be restored. In the meantime, I will continue to spend some quality time lying on the thick green grass inhaling the sweet fragrances of the flowers, eating my picnic lunch at one of the many tables scattered generously all over the property, and then looking out to sea from the gazebo … before going back to capturing a few more of these precious memories with my camera.
To My Farley Hill: your majestic Great House may be gone, but it’s definitely not forgotten.

This is my entry for the WordPress Photo Challenge: Gone, But Not Forgotten
“In today’s challenge, show us what “gone, but not forgotten” means to you. It could be a photo of a faithful canine friend who’s chasing squirrels in a better place, a spot in your city, town, or village that reminds you of a relationship now over, a talisman that reminds you of something that you can never get back, a photo of you in your smashing 70s silver lamé jumpsuit, or the crumbs that remain from the delicious cheesecake you baked.”
lovely story, now I’m going to need to see the movie!

That was some house! More like a palace. My husbands people are from Barbados. I think he’ll enjoy this.

It was indeed some house with a beautiful love story behind it as well (which I’ll share later on). Please let me know if your husband loved it, and where his family is from originally.
