WordPress Photo Challenge: Inspired by Symmetry

The Photo Challenge told us:

“This week, share an image of symmetry. For this challenge, share an image of symmetry. Don’t limit yourself to architecture — you can bend this theme in any way you’d like. A portrait of your twins? A window grille? The yellow lines of a busy road? A row of sharp points along a metal fence? Let the world inspire you.”

Not being entirely sure of what I would post, I went over to the dictionary to make sure I was on the right track:

Symmetry: noun, plural symmetries.

  1. the correspondence in size, form, and arrangement of parts on opposite sides of a plane, line, or point; regularity of form or arrangement in terms of like, reciprocal, or corresponding parts.
  2. the proper or due proportion of the parts of a body or whole to one another with regard to size and form; excellence of proportion.
  3. beauty based on or characterized by such excellence of proportion.

OK now I’ve got it, and here are my photos which except for one were taken during a visit to Beijing, China last year. Beijing is quite a ‘symmetrical’ city (my definition) with everything arranged neatly and in linear order. The Chinese pay great attention to detail and as you can see, they’ve done a pretty good job in ensuring ‘regularity of form’. You can let me know if you agree.

This photo was taken from my hotel room window and appeared to be some kind of storage system but can you see the cute little ‘men’ cleaning the tanks amidst the fluffy white clouds? Ingenious!

My friends and I went for a walk in the area immediately surrounding the hotel. Notice the plants lining the walkways – all evenly spaced and guarding the water wall.

These strategically placed plaques can be found on the path leading up to the Great Wall of China. The Chinese are great lovers of art and many public walls are adorned in this manner.

This is one of my favourite symmetrical photos – isn’t it just beautiful? Perfectly aligned from top to bottom, the flowers were another welcome sight as you approached the Great Wall but I am still trying to figure out all these months later how I am going to create something similar in my own garden.

So these girls … were amazing! We were entertained by these talented dancers (above and below) who performed several dances in perfect harmony. Not a hand, finger nail, head, body or leg was out of place at any time i.e. total symmetry 🙂

And last but not least, the coolest symmetrical pic of all. My son and I definitely illustrate: “the proper or due proportion of the parts of a body or whole to one another with regard to size and form; excellence of proportion.” Spot on!

🙂 🙂 🙂

  1. You did your homework! Love the storage cylinders/silos with the blue sky and clouds. That floral basket “tree” is gorgeous. Fun picture of you and your son. You had lots of great photos for this challenge.
