This is a photo of my son Nathan when he was a baby. Not yet a year old, he was cute and chubby and as you can see, loved posing for the camera. His dad (my husband at the time) loved him dearly (and still do!) and there was no lingering question as to the identity of his parents.
But I am familiar with the fact that life may not be as clear cut as Nathan’s, especially after coming across this beautifully written but very thought-provoking post by Laura A Lord. Of course, Laura’s title drew me in from the get-go (The Man You Call Dad, Is Not Your Father) and after my initial ‘yikes!’ I couldn’t wait to read what she had to say.
Her words were profound and touching, leaving me to wonder how many other women not only found themselves in this same situation but were brave enough to put their thoughts and feelings out there in the open for everyone to see. I admired her honesty and her strength; I admired her willingness to let the past be just that – the past … even in the midst of resigned foresight.
I am not sure how I would feel to find out my mom was not my mom or my dad was not my dad but at 50 years old the identity of my parents isn’t such a big deal in the grand scheme of things I suppose. At the end of the day life happens and the best thing we can do is to do the best we can with the cards that are dealt. Thanks to Laura for sharing such a down-to-earth perspective and for being an inspiration to other women. Here’s how she opened her post:
“The man you call dad, is not your father. There. I said it. And one day, I’m going to have to say it out loud, because one day you are going to come to me and you are going to ask. ” Read more

How amazing.
