To all Parents who Love their Children

I have a son. He is 18 years old. I was so moved by a WP freshly pressed article I read over at I thought I would share it here, especially because it made me wonder: “what if this were me? what would I do? how would I behave?”

I have a son and I know for a fact that parenting can be hard stuff. There is no exclusive detailed manual to guide us – maybe because no one child is the same and by extension no two parents are the same. We try to do the right thing by our children. We try to instill them with our values. We try to put and keep them on the right path. Why? Because we want what’s best for them! There are no ulterior motives involved.

Yet, the biggest lesson of all to be learnt as a parent is this: our path is not our child’s path. Furthermore, it is not usually a good idea beat our breasts or hold our heads in our hands when a child decides to take a different or unconventional life route i.e. do something so against everything we as parents have been taught to believe in or uphold. It just means we’ve done the best we humanly could and now it’s time to let go, to respect, to support, to love without judging or recrimination … in the exact same way that God loves us as His children.
